I DO agree with you… having watched as well the movie.
As an entertainment level, the special effects are simply outstanding and the 2 hours 40 minutes lenght is justified.
However there are still some typical American movie “cliché” such as the crazy guy with his remote radio broadcast unit facing and commentating fearlessly the eruption of Yellowstone and the president of united states sacrifying himself to pray and to face the doomsday with his American conterparts.
The happy end after 27 days makes no sense since the all earth should be covered with dust due to the worlwide volcano eruptions and as you mentioned the level of radioactivity should be high due to the meltdown of the worlwide nuclear facilities but does kilometers high waves could withhold and wash away the radioactivity by jailing the released radioactive particles within the seafloor? Those giant waves would have tremendous mechanical effects…and perhaps enough silting power to trap the particles? just guessing Otherwise, it clearly shows that the worldwide governments could not save the humanity but only the so called elite composed of billionaires, politicians, scientists, scholars, athletes, militaries…the rest of the population will be left to fend by itself…anyway, it makes sense. So surely if the doomsday of civilisation reach us within the next few years, we better be prepared because it is obvious that the media are going to automatically reject and ridicule the 2012 topic;If they were going to tell us the truth it would be a complete chaos and people would stop buying the latest electronics, cars, furnitures…there would be massive suicides worlwide, increasing conflicts, increased economical crises, unsecurity, mass stealing of goods & food…violent fights and on the opposite large new age hippies communities immigrating in the natural parks above 2000 meters JUST PICTURE IT What would be the militaries and forces attitude toward such an uncontrolable worlwide event? Therefore everything has to be done quietly behind our back in order to control the operation smoothly without loosing the control over the military and police forces otherwise even the elite could be in danger.
I think the movie has somehow two purpose:
- Letting the mass of people believe that the 2012 doomsday event is fake because it has been featured in a hollywood movie
- Warning those mentally prepared and mind opened to get ready now! and to confirm to them the coming event.
