Astronomer Frank Florian on 2012 theories An Edmonton-based astronomer doesn’t put any stock in the Mayan end-of-the-world theories for the year 2012.

Frank Florian, director of public programming at the Telus World of Science in Edmonton, believes Dec. 21, 2012 will be like any other day and that the alignment of the sun with the center of the universe will pass without incident.

Florian said planets and other celestial bodies align all the time with no harm coming to the earth and he doesn’t expect Dec. 21, 2012 to be any different.

He compares the Mayan end-of-the-world prediction to the Y2K scare of the turn of the century. In 1999, some pundits believed when the new millennium began there was going to be a worldwide computer crash resulting in planet-wide chaos. It never happened. Florian believes the 2012 predictions will be the same.

It is the Mayan’s own version of [Y2K].

Each year planets align with each other and nothing happens, Florian said. For example, he said Mercury and Saturn were in alignment last Tuesday (Sept. 22) and nothing unusual occurred.

Florian said the end of the Mayan calendar is what it is.

“It’s not really the end of the world or anything like that, it’s basically the start of a new period of time in the Mayan calendar.”

But, said Florian, there is something special happening in 2012 from a celestial point of view — a transit of the planet Venus across the disk of the sun.

“It’s a very rare event that happens every one hundred and twenty-eight years or so.”

Florian said the phenomena will be visible from our region of the country but people will need a specially equipped telescope with a solar filter in order to see it.
Some pundits believe that the sun’s alignment with the center of the universe could result in a myriad of disasters including a polar realignment of the earth, a massive meteorite bombardment, severe earthquakes, planet-wide volcanoes or solar flares, resulting in massive casualties or the end of the world. But Florian thinks it’s all hype.

“I believe they’re getting some erroneous information from somewhere.”, he says.

Fact is that there are many opinions like Florian’s and that not one man can claim to know what exactly will happen in 2012. For the time being, we only can rely on history and try to understand what was meant by the many independent warnings for 2012. If only this will be the end of a calendar that coincides with the alignment of planets, including the transit of Venus across the disk of the sun, the Maya predictions, the iChing, references in the Bible, the so-called Nibiru planet passing by, the cataclysmic events due to a predicted polar shift, the abnormal highly active sunstorms sending highly dangerous radiation into our sphere at a time that our magnetic protective layer is at its lowest in the past few thousands of years…then we can praise ourselves very lucky. Truth is that nobody has a crystal ball to predict the future; we can only derive from what is there. One element missing still, which might shed more light on all of this guessing is the discovery of the infamous Labyrinth of Egypt which supposedly still contains the Hall of Records with knowledge and proof of the previous cataclysm about 12500 years ago and the new one said to happen in 2012. Hopefully with the activities on the Hawara platform which houses the Labyrinth identified by Louis de Cordier and Patrick Geryl through GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) technologies earlier, the Eqyptian government and archeological researchers will uncover the Labyrinth together with this Hall of Records timely. Seen the past censorship with regards to this location or even the existence of it, let’s also hope that their ‘law to not excavate until…end of 2012′ won’t become a further roadblock. And when the info is available, the world can only be served to know…so let there be no further censorship!

Astronomers, scientists, authors…there will remain disagreement until the end. For now we have to choose sides and believe what we believe. At least it won’t hurt to prepare just in case there would be such a disaster after all…closing our minds to it would prove the most foolish thing to have done!
