Eyjafjallajökull Is Beginning of Decades of Misery
The ash clouds of the Eyjafjallajökull are just the beginning of decades of volcanic activity in Iceland en consequently represent the equal number of years of disturbance for the airline industry. Scottish scientists have come to this conclusion. They studied 205 eruptions out of a total of the past 1,100 eruptions.
One of the conclusions is that each time the eruptions happened in clusters of several decades.
Peak
“The past 50 years we experienced a quiet period. But now it looks like this has come to an end. We are slowly approaching a new peak in activity.”, says Thor Thordarson at the University of Edinburgh.
Hekla and Katla
Three volcanoes bigger than Eyjafjallajökull – Grimsvöth, Hekla and Askja – are building up to reach the point of eruption. On top of the Hekla, snow has started melting already, which is an indication that magma is rising to the top. The Eyjafjallajökull itself could stay active for years to come.
Previously Katla, 25 kms from Eyjafjallajökull, was named as a potential successor in Iceland eruptions. Eruptions by Katla have been preceded by eruptions of the much smaller Eyjafjallajökull 2 out 3 times.
Nuance
Other volcano experts are more optimistic about the outlook on these sad predictions. Amongst them volcano expert Manuel Sinbutin of KU-Leuven (University of Belgium), points out that despite the accurate monitoring, there is no scientific proof that the other craters are active now. At the same time they cannot exclude this either.
The Katla volcano is being tracked by GPS to detect any swelling. Seismological scientists currently have not detected movements at this time.
In any case, if any of these volcanoes becomes active, the world will experience effects 100 to 1000 larger than currently with the small Eyjafjallajökull. This in itself will completely alter the way we use transportation and likely global climate for many decades to come.

This is Gerard Le Flamand and I dedicated this blog to prepare for the disastrous events to happen in 2012.

Nobody knows for certain how will the activity of the volcano evolve: In fact, after this year’s eruption the thing is fairly quiet, for now. Iceland has always been active in volcanic terms and no particular disaster or misery came out of that for centuries. Indeed, volcanic eruptions are not to be treated lightly, but as the case of the Chaiten in Chile – I live a hundred km away, in Argentina – proved, even volcanoes dormant for thousands of years could become active again. Those events are spectacular and they do have an impact on our environment, which is not always for worse: In fact, plants grew more in Patagonia after ashes from the Chaiten fell on them. To have a true catastrophe, volcanic activity should extend for centuries, like in the case of the Putorana plateau at the end of the Permian, or at a lesser, scale, a volcanic explosion and collapse, which would be like a medium-sized atomic bomb. Seems not to be the case of the Icelandic volcanoes, so far.
Survive?
When came in my mind
… I thought how long I live? If 2012 disaster is happen or not … how long I live on this planet … one day I must die … so, I think after my death … what will be happened after death … is there any life, after death? Yes, then I go for it … preparing myself for that life … because I believe that one day (near or far, may be after 100 years) I must die… I must die … for another life … but for new life… forever
…
I keep hearing that Volcanic activity is increasing however is this not due that now more than in the past they are reported more. Does anyone have any numbers to show this, as far as I’m aware there have always been active volcanoes around the world, no dead ones have come to life after thousands of years have they?
If you could help me I would be grateful.
Regards,
Glenn
Changes in the world surrounding us are undoubtedly accelerated.
the more i read the more i am considering….”why would i want to survive”…the world will not be as we know it…the suffering will likely be catastropic…..teh ones who don’t survive could well be the lucky ones…not the ones left to suffer a different, unpredicable, hostile new planet…living in a new world where we are back in time and literally starting all over again….who will control this new world, ( i guarantee it won’t be women) what about the medicines and surgeries that save our lives over and over again…….and .i would not trust that this would be a safe place to be…especially if you are a woman…..
